Effect of the Memorial Day Weekend | Ocean City Maryland

Holiday weekends bring with them the crowds of people that rush to our area for a long weekend of time at the beach. As frustrating as it may be at times, these visitors are the reason we have jobs, and can remain living in our own personal paradise. After being in Ocean City on Saturday night, I have a feeling this may have been a record breaking weekend, with more people than I have ever seen walking up and down Coastal Highway at midnight. Every bar between 49th street and 66th street seemed to have an endless line of people waiting to get in. How great this was for our local businesses! My only request to some of these visitors, because I cannot generalize that all behave this way, is that when you come to our town for your vacation, just remember that people do live here as well.

  • Treat others with respect, including those around you and especially those that are serving you throughout your stay.
  • Watch your step and be safe in your adventures throughout our town, be aware of the fact that Coastal Highway is just that, an 8 lane highway.
  • Make use of the public transportation or many cabs that are available, instead of driving. This will do much to save lives!
  • Respect the beauty of the beach that you are coming to enjoy. DO NOT leave trash on our beaches, in our ocean or our bays.

I don’t know what options there are, but I wish that there was a way to curb the fatalities that do happen in this town. Wouldn’t it be great if we could limit the number of cars that actually come into town? Actually have people park at the Park n Ride and shuttle into town, or only allow one car per residence. Sure it sounds insane and drastic, but our lovely beach town is overrun by cars and trucks once Memorial Day hits. Let’s shut down a lane of traffic, add a half wall and allow the current bus lane to be only for pedestrians, bicycles and longboards. If we make the town more pedestrian friendly, and less reliant on all of the unnecessary cars, we may be able to reduce the number of accidents all around. The next lane of traffic, is just for buses, shuttles and cabs leaving one lane for the cars that are allowed into town…. Ahhh yes, maybe I live in a dream world but why cant we start thinking of something completely out of the box?
