Artist Spotlight on The Electric Co. – Live Music Delmarva

Usually we attend the live shows, take photos and post after to share. With home renovations in full effect and the holidays upon us, there seems to be more and more musical events that we have not been able to cover. BUT… we want YOU to go see those shows. If you do, feel free to send photos and we will post and give you credit! We also want to make sure there is a good crowd for the band. That being said, you can catch The Electric Co.and their members at a couple different spots this week.

Born together on the DelMarVa Peninsula from many, many years of  music performance, recording, touring, blood, sweat and soul, we bring you TheElectricCo.

John Sybert and Sonny Martin, both of legendary East-Coast jam band G-13, have teamed up with national independent singer/songwriter, Nate Clendenen to form the next serious band to come out of the Mid-Atlantic… the Electric Co.  John, the principle member and songwriter behind G-13’s catchy riffs and infectious arrangements combined with Nate and his distinctive approach to lyric and song to make a hybrid of improvisational and roots oriented material.  Think the Allman Brothers, Waylon Jennings, and Jimmy Cliff in a smoky jam session.  No bells, no whistles.  Currently the Electric Co. is performing with guitar guru Ryan Jackson of the regionally-based rock/jazz fusion group, Permilla Project.  Between the four of them they posses years upon years of touring, recording, and performance experience in genres as diverse as punk to reggae and bluegrass to jazz.

Hands down, G-13 made a huge contribution to the Rock scene on the East Coast.  Their penchant for seemingly endless improvisations, weaving together many musical genres made lasting impressions on thousands of fans.  They graced countless stages of great mention like those at Smilefest, the Sunshine Daydream Gathering, the State Theatre in Falls Church, VA, Music Farm in Columbia, SC and BB King’s in New York City, NY… just to name a very small few.  Releasing the very much anticipated album, Still Dancin’ in 2004 brought several great factors together.  G-13’s blend of great lyrics, awesome arrangements, and superb musicianship turned out a great record nearly ten years in the making.  Not to mention such industry heavy hitter contributions as Mark Karan (Bob Wier and Ratdog) on guitar and production, Jeff Chimenti (The Dead) on keys, and Barry Sless (Phil Lesh and Friends, David Nelson Band) on pedal steel.

At the center of all of this is John Sybert.  John is the principle founding member of the band.  He watched G-13 evolve from an acoustic trio, into a 7 piece rock improv powerhouse.  His musical drive being born in the Baltimore punk scene and carried across all genre lines to the psychedelic roots rock pioneered by the SanFrancisco scene of the late 1960’s.  This surprising shift brings a specific edge to his songwriting, musicianship, and overall approach… an edge rarely found in the jam scene.  Drummer Sonny Martin’s hard driving rhythm is what carried G-13 from bar band to festival standout.  The keel of a ship… the trunk of a tree.  John and Sonny’s bond as a rhythm section is right on as their liason is well tried and true.  G-13’s impact is undeniable… and their heritage has continued with the Electric Co.

Nate Clendenen has been a professional musician and songwriter since the age of 14.  On his own, he has toured to all corners of the Continental United States and twice in Australia.  He has released several recording projects, and achieved airplay on many FM and XM channels all as a solo, independent artist.  Over the years he’s performed with musicians of all genre’s such as Larry Keel, Rondha Vincent, Kenny Rogers, the Samples, Virginia Coalition, Joseph Hill and Culture, Hot Buttered Rum, and many, many more.  His approach to writing centers around the fundamentals of the song itself.  Nate’s musical constitution began listening to his parents records of the 1970’s… Dylan, Paul Simon, James Taylor… and has wound its way through all forms of roots music.  Bluegrass, Reggae, Folk, African, Industrial – you name it.  Nate is a classically trained vocalist and percussionist, an award-winning bluegrass flat picker, and bonafied road-warrior.

Ryan Jackson, the thrilling most recent addition to the Electric Co, has been playing music professionally for going on fifteen years. He is a classically trained vocalist and, having studied guitar for over 16 years, has been involved with many reputable private instructors both at the collegiate and private levels. Ryan has expressed his immense talents in several great projects past and present.  M.O.J.O., Dr. Jones, and his other current outfit, The Permilla Project, are just some of the bands he has been associated with over the years. Jackson has performed on many of the area’s most prestigious stages including Carnegie Hall, The 8×10, and The Historic Avalon Theatre. Not to mention that he’s performed and collaborated with The Bridge, Mookie Siegel (Phil Lesh and Friends), Chris Vadala and Daniell Landherr (Trans Siberian Orchestra).  Furthermore, The Permilla Project’s most recent release, “I Heard That,” was recorded and co-produced by Frank Marchand III who’s artist roster includes Jimmie’s Chicken Shack, Good Charlotte, The All Mighty Senators, and Kyle Hollingsworth of The String Cheese Incident. Ryan’s thickly steeped blues and jazz guitar style adds another very distinct, perfectly tasteful facet to the roots rock prowess of the Electric Co.

Do the math.  With over 60 years of musical experience, millions of miles on the road, hundreds of songs, thousands of fans, the combined talents of the Electric Co are not to be taken lightly.
