Buy Local Challenge…Challenges on Delmarva

We are coming to the end of the month long Buy Local Challenge, and I say we have done a fairly good job as a family. The kids are definitely getting antsy for the refrigerator and pantry to be full of food again. Financially it is unfortunately more expensive to buy local products and buy from the smaller local businesses, but you also tend to get better quality products and more personable service. This week we continue to get our bread from Baked Dessert Cafe in Berlin, coffee from the Berlin Coffee House, and I purchased other items such as laundry detergent and dish soap, pasta and cereal from OC Organics. One thing I realized recently is that we use a lot of parmesan cheese, and I have not been able to find it! After thinking more, I realized that SouthSide Deli would have some good quality parmesan and they are a locally owned business!

As for the challenge, I did come across one this past weekend…As I was planning for an offshore fishing trip and needed to supply drinks and snacks for the girls on the boat, I was stuck on where I could go to stock up, and after much internal struggle I did walk back into Food Lion for the first time in 25 days! On the plus side? Fresh fish for dinner, can’t get more local than that!
