Local Focus: Community Coming Together

com – mu – ni – ty
[kuh-myoo-ni-tee] noun
a social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and often have a common cultural and historical heritage. Our small year-round community of Delmarva seems to be an extremely giving community. We may all come from different walks of life, dealing with all sorts of bumps in the road, yet we come together when one is in need. I don’t know if other areas are similar to ours, in helping those in need, but I love living in an area that comes together to help others. From battling illness to financial strife, to raising money for awareness and research.

Friday night was an event to bring Breast Cancer Awareness month to a close, Jammin for a Cure. The amount of items that were donated for the auction items were fantastic! Seeing how generous our community and business owners are, brings tears to my eyes. Just last night, hosted by Fager’s Island, was a fundraiser for Charles Keenan, who grew up in the area and was recently diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. A golf tournament kicked off the fundraiser yesterday, with a night-long event at Fager’s. I hope the event was a success, anytime you can help another in need is a good thing.

In this time of high unemployment, foreclosure crisis, political turmoil across the globe and a food system that is questionable, we must remember what we can do to help our own community and those who populate it. Let’s come together to keep our area sustainable, healthy & strong.
